Since 1990, the Los Gatos and Monte Sereno communities have generously supported our local elementary and middle schools by voting in place a parcel tax, which generates about $2.6 million per year to support high student achievement, competitive teacher salaries and our well-rounded curriculum.
How does the parcel tax support student achievement and high quality instruction in our schools?
- Retaining skilled and qualified teachers
- Maintaining up-to-date science programs
- Keeping class sizes as small as possible
- Continuing literacy programs
- Maintaining art and music programs
- Maintaining library staff and services
- Providing counseling and other student health and safety programs
Why does the district need to continue to renew the parcel tax?
- The current parcel tax will expire in 2014
- Renewing the parcel tax will:
- Retain and recruit quality teachers
- Support academic enrichment programs such as science and the arts
- Continue to keep class sizes small so that students can receive individual attention
How do I know that the parcel tax funds will be spent fairly and wisely?
- All parcel tax funds stay here in our local Los Gatos elementary and middle schools to improve educational programs—the state can’t take a single dime
- A Budget Advisory Committee, comprised of parents, teachers and other local residents, will review and report on parcel tax spending to ensure that funds are spent wisely and used to enhance student achievement
How does the parcel tax relate to Home and School Club (HSC) and Los Gatos Education Foundation (LGEF) fundraising?
- The parcel tax provides essential ongoing funds for educational programs and teachers
- The HSCs and LGEF raise money annually to help supplement programs, educational specialists and other vital services for our students
- LGEF funds are used at the district level, while HSC funds are raised for specific schools
