Important Health Update!
New Immunization Requirement for 7th-12th grade students
Assembly Bill 354 requires that ALL students entering grades 7 though 12 receive a Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) booster immunization prior to the start of school in August 2011. Documentation of this immunization must be on file in the school's health office or the student will not be allowed to attend school.
Since student schedules are developed during the summer, it is advised that parents provide the documentation of this immunization by the end of June 2011. Delay in doing so could cause disruption in class scheduling.
This requirement:
- Can be met by receiving one dose of Tdap vaccine on or after the 7thbirthday
- Applies to all 7th – 12th grade incoming (new and returning) students
- Applies to all public and private schools
- Begins July 1, 2011
- Requires that DOCUMENTATION MUST be provided to the health office
From the District Nurse
Pertussis, also known as whopping cough, is epidemic in California. It is reported by The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) that as of October 26, 2010, there have been 6,257 confirmed, probable and suspect cases of pertussis this year. There have been 10 infant deaths due to pertussis.
Pertussis is an extremely contagious respiratory disease, caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. The patient typically has an uncontrollable and violent cough, which may cause breathing difficulties.
Infants and young children are especially susceptible and more vulnerable to fatal complications of pertussis.
Typically children are immunized in childhood against pertussis with the DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis) vaccine. Four to five doses are given prior to entering kindergarten. The CDPH now recommends that all Californians 10 years of age and over, receive the booster immunization of Tdap. Assembly Bill 354, now California Law, requires all students entering 7th through 12th grade in the fall of 2011 receive the booster after the age of 10.
