LGUSD Digital Citizenship Certification Curriculum Overview

Teaching & Learning in the Digital Age

The TLDA initiative represents the collective work of parents, teachers, and LGUSD administration collaborating in the development of the following:

This six week course features a combination of direct instruction, small group activities and individual work focused on appropriate and ethical use of technology and Internet safety. The curriculum will focus on creativity, innovation, communication and collaboration. Students design and develop a curriculum-integrated project to present at a Digital Citizen Certification Celebration. All students maintain an electronic portfolio.

Elements of Digital Citizenship

The LGUSD Digital Citizenship Certification Program identifies the following eight elements:

    2. Digital Literacy - Internet
    3. Digital Literacy - Productivity
    4. Digital Literacy - Creativity
    5. Digital Communication, Collaboration
    6. Digital Etiquette (combined with #5)
    7. Digital Rights and Responsibilities
    8. Digital Health and Wellness (combined with #7)

Unit 1: Digital Identity

Digital Identity represents the identity of an individual or group of individuals based upon their web presence, multimedia images, audio and video. Students will evaluate the digital identity of historical figures.

Unit 2: Digital Literacy - Internet

Digital Literacy - Internet explores a "Believe it or not" hoax and identifies critical thinking skills to assess the credibility of various results on a search results page.

Unit 3: Digital Literacy - Productivity

Digital Literacy - Productivity introduces students to key productivity software applications including but not limited to: iWork (Pages, Keynote, Numbers), Dictionary/Thesaurus, Calculator

Unit 4: Digital Literacy - Creativity

Digital Literacy - Creativity introduces students to key creativity software applications including but not limited to: iLife (iPhoto, GarageBand, iTunes, iMovie, iWeb), Inspiration and Comic Life.

Unit 5: Digital Communication & Collaboration

Digital Communication and Collaboration introduces students to a wide range of communication and collaboration tools including but not limited to blogging and iChat.

Unit 6: Digital Etiquette

Digital Etiquette addresses appropriate and ethical use of technology.

Activities

Unit 7: Digital Rights and Responsibilities

Digital Rights and Responsibilities addresses rights and responsibilities of Digital Citizens.

Unit 8: Digital Health & Wellness

Digital Health and Wellness addresses Internet safety and cyberbullying.

All TLDA students participate in the Digital Citizenship Certification Curriculum which culminates in a Digital Citizenship Celebration. Students maintain an electronic portfolio throughout the 6-week unit.
